Before the Internet became such a fascinating source for information, word on the street was that a Groom's Cake was a fine Southern tradition borne from the groom's desire to share devil's food cake with his friends. They escaped to the parlor to take a drink, smoke a cigar, and eat chocolate cake. If the weather was nice, they might even shoot skeet from the front porch!
Nowadays, nobody is quite sure of the groom's cake's origin, but it's taken on a life of its own. Still chocolate cake with chocolate icing, it can be elegant or humorous; served at the wedding or the rehearsal dinner; or not served at all. |
